Australia's New Genuine Student Requirements(GSR)

Australia's New Genuine Student Requirements(GSR)

The Australian Government has introduced the Genuine Student (GS) requirement to replace the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement. The GS requirement retains the core principles of ensuring that student visa applicants genuinely intend to study and can fulfil the course requirements.

The new GS requirement applies to student visa applications lodged on or after March 23, 2024. Applications lodged before this date are processed according to the GTE requirement.

What is the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement?

International students who apply for student visas must meet the GS requirements. This includes explaining the choice of a specific course, details of the education provider, the course’s alignment with their career goals, and why they chose Australia. They must also display English language proficiency, financial capacity to pursue the course, and ties to their home country. Additionally, applicants must furnish a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) from an Australian education provider.

The transition from the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) to the Genuine Student (GS) requirement signifies the Australian Government’s continued emphasis on keeping the Australian border open for international students.

Suppose you are an Indian student applying for a student visa to Australia. In that case, it is crucial to understand the critical components of Genuine Student (GS) requirements and the online process to apply.

Key Components of Genuine Student (GS) Requirements

  • Explain how the course aligns with your future career plans.
  • Reasons for choosing Australia over your home country, if a similar course is available in your home country.
  • Personal circumstances in your home country.

2. Proof of Genuine Intention

The following are some of the essential proofs that you need to provide:

  • Explanation of the benefits of the chosen course to your career plans in India or internationally.
  • Include any research undertaken about the course and institution.

  • Online Submission: Once you prepare all the documents, you must submit the Genuine Student (GS) requirement as part of the student visa application through the Department of Home Affairs website.
