World Stroke Day: Stroke Treatment and Prevention Strategies

World Stroke Day: Stroke Treatment and Prevention Strategies

According to global statistics, 6.5 million people die every year due to a stroke, and 1 in 4 people are at risk of having a stroke. This silent killer affects people in all age groups and is one of the leading causes of disability and death. With a sharp rise in the number of stroke cases, there is a need to increase awareness about the risk factors, signs and prevention strategies.

The World Stroke Organisation observes World Stroke Day every year on October 29th to educate people about this critical health issue, identify stroke symptoms, and advocate its prevention. Keep reading to learn more about the importance of this day, the warning signs of a stroke and how to protect yourself.

History and Importance of World Stroke Day

This year, World Stroke Day will be celebrated to motivate everyone to act every day and be ‘Greater Than Stroke’. In 2004, the World Stroke Congress started this initiative in Vancouver, Canada, to observe a stroke awareness day. Later, in 2006, the World Stroke Organisation was formed to take control of World Stroke Day and lead campaigns to spread awareness.

The main objective behind observing a brain stroke day is to,

  1. Spread awareness about the signs and symptoms of a stroke
  2. Emphasise the importance of the Golden Hour and immediate medical aid
  3. Provide long-term care and support for stroke survivors
  4. Promote stroke prevention by educating people about the risk factors and preventive measures

Let's understand the basics of a stroke!

What is a Stroke?

A stroke or a brain stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted due to bleeding in the brain or a blocked blood vessel. Brain cells need oxygen to function, supplied to the brain through blood. When there is a lack of blood supply, brain cells start dying due to lack of oxygen, causing long-term disability or death. A stroke is a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, not many people can recognise the signs of a stroke that are crucial to saving a life.

B.E.F.A.S.T. in Recognising the Signs of a Stroke

Some common symptoms of a stroke include sudden weakness, numbness on one side of the body, severe headache, disorientation, and dizziness. However,  in cases of silent strokes where there are no apparent symptoms, identifying the warning signs of a stroke as soon as possible is crucial in saving a life or preventing lifelong damage to the brain.

BEFAST is an easier way to remember the signs of a stroke.

B (Balance): A loss of balance or coordination may cause stumbling while walking.

E (Eyes): A blurred or blackened vision which causes trouble in seeing or double vision.

F (Face): If one side of the face becomes numb or starts drooping while smiling.

A (Arm): Check whether the person can raise both arms. If he can, check whether one arm is drifting downwards.

S (Speech): Ask the person to repeat a phrase and notice if the speech is slurred or difficult to understand.

T (Time): Call for an emergency immediately if you notice any or all of the above signs. Getting the proper treatment on time can save a life and help in complete stroke recovery.

The 90 Minute Rule

A stroke patient can recover fully with no damage if he gets the proper treatment within 90 minutes of the first symptoms appearing. Remember that immediate action is essential for stroke treatment because the earlier a patient receives medical attention the better the outcome.

Preventing a Stroke

Knowing and managing risk factors is crucial in preventing stroke. The significant risk factors that contribute to the likelihood of a stroke include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking and Alcohol consumption
  • Family history

Adopting a healthier lifestyle is the only way to reduce the chances of getting a stroke.

  • Eat a balanced diet to maintain a healthy level of cholesterol and control diabetes.
  • Regular exercising like aerobics, yoga, and weight training helps keep you active and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage stress levels through meditation and leisure activities to control blood pressure.
  • Quit unhealthy habits like smoking and alcohol consumption for your overall well-being.
  • Do regular medical checkups to monitor your health if you have a family history of strokes.
