A Rose for Hope: Celebrating World Rose Day to Raise Cancer Awareness

Every year, 10 million people die from cancer. Over the past decade, over 200 types of cancers have been identified. Nearly half of all cancer cases and one-third of cancer-related deaths can be prevented. World Rose Day, also known as the Day for the Welfare of Cancer Patients, is observed globally on September 22nd. This day is dedicated to cancer patients and symbolises hope and courage for those undergoing cancer treatment. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises this day to raise awareness for cancer and support cancer patients and their families.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is when normal cells multiply uncontrollably and start spreading. There are many types of cancers, depending on where they start in your body. Most of these types are curable if detected early. Cancer symptoms also depend on the type of cancer one has.

Cancer is caused by a genetic disorder, but it does not mean it is inherited. It occurs when the genes that control your normal cell activities start changing and developing abnormal cell growth. These abnormal cells are called cancerous cells, which develop clusters called tumours. Sometimes, these cells spread through the body through blood.

What are the Main Causes of Cancer?

There can be many causes of cancer. However, certain risk factors increase your chances of getting cancer.

Family History

If any of your immediate family members, including your parents, siblings and grandparents, have cancer, your chances of getting cancer increase.

Tobacco Use

Consuming tobacco or smoking is another risk factor that increases your chances of developing oral cancer, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer.

Exposure to Radiation

Excessive exposure to radiotherapy and prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

Environment

Sometimes toxins like benzene, asbestos, vinyl chloride, etc., present in the environment also cause certain types of cancer.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Overeating junk food, including high salt and high sugar foods, makes you vulnerable to lifestyle diseases, which increases your risk of getting cancer.

World Rose Day: History

World Rose Day is observed in memory of a 12-year-old girl, Melinda Rose, from Canada. In the year 1994, Melinda was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer and passed away in 1996. Melinda's unwavering spirit, courage, and positive attitude during her battle with cancer became an inspiration for many other cancer patients. She wrote beautiful poems and letters to uplift fellow cancer patients. Her ability to spread positivity, cheerfulness, and resilience amazed even the doctors.  Recognising her talent for instilling hope in others, 22nd September was designated World Rose Day in 2000.

World Rose Day 2024 Theme and Significance

The theme for World Rose Day 2024 revolves around Cancer Awareness and making a difference in the lives of cancer patients who are struggling emotionally and physically. This day is celebrated by distributing roses to cancer patients as a symbol of love to let them know that they are not alone in their fight against this life-threatening disease.

The day signifies much more than exchanging roses. It encourages kindness and compassion towards cancer patients and their families and understanding their daily challenges. Some of the major objectives of this day are:

  1. Educating people about cancer and risk factors, highlight the measures they can adopt for Cancer Prevention and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
  2. Encouraging individuals to undergo cancer screenings for early detection, potentially saving lives.
  3. Motivating people and organisations to help treat cancer patients who need financial support.
  4. To acknowledge the progress made in cancer research and treatment options available to ensure cancer patients that it is a curable disease.
