Yoga in Lockdown

The lockdown situation due to the coronavirus pandemic has seriously impacted our lifestyle and health care routine. Social isolation and restrictions on movement have triggered stress and anxiety. People are now confined to the four walls of their houses and they are now trying newer ways to stay fit.

Yoga has become an integral part of the new-found routine, for many of us under quarantine. Starting the day with a 30-min yoga session can do a world of good for the body.

The benefits of yoga go beyond just improving the flexibility of the body and relaxing the mind. An ancient practice that originated thousands of years ago, yoga is also known to improve immunity.

Let us understand.

Yoga Makes the Immune System Strong

At this time when the risks of the contagious disease - Covid-19 - are higher, it is better to keep one’s immune system strong to avoid the possibility of contracting any infection. This can be done by consuming a nutritious diet. Simultaneously, performing yoga while you are in quarantine can also be beneficial in strengthening the immune system.

Stress can seriously impact the immunity levels. Yoga, on the other hand, lowers the stress hormones and improves the overall functioning of the body, while also boosting the immune system.

Some Useful Yoga Techniques

  • Sukhasana: One of the simplest poses in yoga, the Sukhasana involves sitting in a cross-legged position. It is a meditative yoga pose that helps in calming the nervous system, reducing stress hormones and improving heart rate, thus aiding the functioning of the immune system.
  • Pranayama: It is a type of breathing exercise involving proper breath control, inhalation and exhalation. This powerful yoga technique has tremendous positive effects on the respiratory system, thus improving the blood circulation and stimulating the immune system. Spend at least 15 minutes in a day for pranayama.
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose): This posture involves lying on one’s stomach and lifting the head while taking deep breaths. Apart from toning the abdomen, this exercise helps the chest to open and augments the growth of T-cells which boost the immune response.
  • Matsyasana (Fish Pose): This is a traditional yoga technique that energizes the lungs and heart. It is also helpful in relieving congestion and works towards boosting the immune system.
  • Uttanasana: This is a forward bend pose that aids in enhanced blood flow to the sinuses and clears congestion. Sinuses and mucus membranes have a vital role in protecting the body against elements and infections.

Some Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Create a quiet and clean space at home for practising yoga.
  • Wear comfortable clothes when performing yoga.
  • Set a fixed time for yoga practice and adhere to it daily.
  • Make sure you practise yoga techniques on an empty stomach.
  • Consult your doctor and avoid practising if you are pregnant or suffer from any medical condition.
