National Cancer Awareness Day, to be observed on November 7th, highlights the importance of early detection, prevention, and access to treatment in the fight against cancer. India’s former Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched this 2014 to spread public awareness about cancer. We have so many real-life stories of cancer survivors in the society who set an inspiration to all. One such real-life example that has inspired millions is the story of Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. He was diagnosed with mediastinal seminoma, a rare form of lung cancer in November 2011. This came as a shocker shortly after his stellar performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup. The way Yuvraj fought this physical, and emotional battle, is an inspiration to many.
Through his journey, Yuvraj has become a beacon of hope, using his ‘YouWeCan’ platform to raise awareness about early detection and the importance of financial readiness when dealing with cancer. On this National Cancer Awareness Day, millions of such stories remind us that early detection, the right treatment, and financial preparedness can significantly improve outcomes for patients across India.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in India, with over 9,30,000 cancer-related causalities registered in 2022. As per the report by the National Library of Medicine, one in nine Indians are at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime and the case rate is likely to increase by 12.8% in 2025 as compared to 2020. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the number of cancer cases in the country is projected to increase to 29.8 million by 2025. The most common types of cancer in India are breast cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, and oral cancer, with tobacco consumption being a significant contributor to the rising cases of lung and oral cancers.
The burden of cancer is not limited to its physical and emotional toll on the patient and their family but extends to the financial stress. Cancer requires prolonged treatment that is often expensive, leading many families to experience financial hardship.
One of the primary goals of National Cancer Day and World Cancer Awareness Day is to emphasise the importance of early detection. Studies show that early detection can significantly increase survival rates. For instance, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer detected at an early stage can be as high as 99%, but it drops to around 27% when the cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage. Similarly, 61% of people diagnosed with lung cancer at an early stage can live for at least five years. Cervical cancer, which is highly preventable through regular screening, still claims the lives of over 60,000 women in India annually due to a lack of awareness and access to preventive healthcare.
In the last few years, both corporate and government initiatives have played a crucial role in cancer awareness, early detection, and cancer treatment in India. The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) is a government initiative for cancer prevention. It aims to address this issue by promoting cancer awareness and facilitating the screening of common cancers at the primary healthcare level. Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), is also one of the government initiatives that has made strides in providing free cancer treatment to millions of low-income families. Under this scheme, beneficiaries can avail of free cancer treatment at empanelled hospitals across the country. This has been a lifeline for many families who would otherwise not be able to afford the high cost of cancer care.
However, a substantial gap remains in the public's understanding of cancer symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of regular health check-ups.
Many corporations have launched Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at cancer awareness, prevention, and treatment. For example, Tata Memorial Hospital, one of India’s leading cancer care centres, has been at the forefront of cancer treatment and research. The hospital has also partnered with several corporations to fund cancer research and provide free or subsidised treatment to underprivileged patients.
Despite all the initiatives and measures, certain challenges need to be addressed in India’s fight against cancer. Here are the challenges:
To sum up, National Cancer Awareness Day serves as a reminder to understand the need for early detection, prevention, and access to quality treatment to fight cancer. With the growing case burden in India, there is an urgent need for increased awareness, better healthcare infrastructure, and more widespread access to health insurance for cancer. Health insurance, particularly designed to cater to the needs of cancerpatients, plays a crucial role in recovery by reducing the financial burden of treatment. A continuous effort involving the government, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and the public is essential to combat cancer in the future.
