Addiction in Adolescents? How to Control the Same?

Addiction in Adolescents? How to Control the Same?

Many teenagers begin vaping because they believe it is a safe substitute for smoking. While adults use electronic cigarettes to help them stop smoking, most teens misread this habit. This leads to a significant increase in substance abuse and addiction issues. Moreover, specific electronic cigarettes claim to be nicotine-free when they are not. Most of the time, an electronic cigarette contains nicotine. This keeps teens from learning about the side effects of vaping.

This article talks about e-cigarettes, mental health issues and drug addiction. But first, let's learn what vape is.

What is an Electronic Cigarette?

An electronic cigarette, often known as a vape pen, is a battery-powered device that heats a liquid into an inhaled mist(aerosol). Typically, the aerosol contains flavourings, nicotine, and other substances harmful to the lungs.

Studies have shown that vapes do contain nicotine, even though the manufacturers state otherwise. Some may also include oils, herbs, or marijuana.

E-cigarettes are available in different forms, sizes, and shapes. Most feature a heating element, a battery, and a liquid-holding capacity. They go by several names, such as electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), tank systems, e-cigs, vape pens, e-hookahs, mods, and vapes.

What is Vape?

Inhaling an aerosol (mist) produced by an electronic cigarette or other vaping device is known as vaping. Certain e-cigarettes look similar to those of cigars, regular cigarettes, or pipes. While some replicate pens, USB flash devices, and other commonplace objects, some are larger. Tank systems, sometimes known as "mods," are larger devices that don't resemble other tobacco products.

What are the Health Effects of Vaping?

There are many health effects that vaping can bring. Below are some side effects of vaping. Have a look!

Addiction

Nicotine, the substance found in an electronic cigarette, is highly addicting. It's not necessary to vape daily to develop an addiction. That drug in itself is addictive.

Depression, Anxiety, and Sleep Issues

Nicotine exacerbates these conditions. Additionally, it drastically impacts attention, memory, focus, self-control, and sleeping patterns, particularly in developing brains.

Becoming a Smoker

Individuals who vape have a higher probability of starting to smoke (tobacco) cigarettes and are also at a higher risk of developing other drug addictions in the future.

Impotence

Some research suggests vaping may contribute to male sexual dysfunction.

Fatal Chronic Bronchitis

Vaping can cause severe lung damage that can be life-threatening. It can destroy the entire airway and eventually lead to chronic inflammation.

Mental Health Issues and Drug Addiction

Electronic cigarettes can create room for extensive mental health issues and drug addiction. Compared to other age groups, young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are more prone to suffer from mental illness and substance use disorders.

Although men are more likely to suffer from substance use disorders, women tend to suffer more from mood and anxiety disorders.

Addicts with a substance use disorder are twice as likely to have a mental illness as the general population. Substance use disorders co-occur in at least 20% of individuals with mental illnesses. The percentage could reach 50% for people with schizophrenia.

In a similar vein, the likelihood of mental health issues and drug addiction in those with substance use disorders is up to three times higher.

Why is Nicotine so Addictive for Teens?

Individuals, especially youths, may develop a craving for more nicotine due to specific triggers in their brains caused by an electronic cigarette or nicotine. The brain develops until about age 25. It is well-known yet, at this age, each new habit or skill learnt strengthens the existing ones.

Since addiction is a learned behaviour, it is more common among teens. In other words, youth have addiction problems and are vulnerable to electronic cigarettes and vaping. Moreover, the nicotine used in vaping and electronic cigarettes can also train their brain to become more susceptible to drug addiction in general.

Is Vaping Harmful?

Nicotine travels to the brain after being absorbed via blood circulation. Within seconds, it releases dopamine in the brain, which makes teenagers feel good. It is just a matter of time before inhaling electronic cigarette smoke, vape mist, or chewing tobacco makes teens happy.

People eventually develop a craving for that particular feeling that comes from nicotine. Now, to experience the same dopamine and rush, teenagers start smoking more and more tobacco. This causes addiction without health issues. With time, this addiction creates a severe health issue that can eventually be fatal.

Because nicotine interacts with the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline in the body, some teens may also experience an increase in energy or focus from nicotine. However, there is no doubt that nicotine causes mental health issues and drug addiction, besides severe addiction control issues. Lead and cancer-causing chemicals are just two of the potentially dangerous ingredients in vaping products.

Why is Nicotine Unsafe for Teens?

Nicotine, the harmful and addictive substance found in traditional cigars, cigarettes, and other products, is a major component of the majority of electronic cigarettes.

Certain vape products have nicotine hidden on their labels. They do not reveal it, thereby increasing addiction control issues. It has also been discovered that several vape liquids advertised as having no nicotine do contain nicotine. This can cause severe addiction issues for kids, Teens, and young adults who are unaware of the details.

Does Vape Cause Cancer?

The brain develops until about age 25. Under these circumstances, young adults who use electronic cigarettes experience damage to the areas of the nervous system that are responsible for mood signals, impulse control, learning, attention, and learning.

Children's brains develop synapses faster than adults. Nicotine alters and manipulates the processes by which these synapses develop. As a result, it can cause severe lung diseases, lung cancer, and life-threatening illnesses.

Nicotine Addiction And Youth Mental Health

When a youth is addicted to drugs/nicotine and tries quitting it, their nervous system and body start fighting against it. They find it extremely difficult to stop, cope, and comprehend their addiction issues. This leads to severe withdrawal symptoms from nicotine.

As a result, signs of irritability, restlessness, anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping, difficulty focusing, and a continuous need for nicotine cause damage to their mental health.

Consequently, young people switch to vaping and electronic cigarettes as a coping mechanism for anxiety, stress and depression. This leads to a vicious cycle of drug/nicotine addiction.

Addiction might develop from something that may begin as a social experiment. "A friend used them" is generally the most casual excuse children give for attempting an electronic cigarette.

Most youth say they feel depressed, anxious, or stressed as their justification for keeping up their electronic cigarette use. All of this adds to making addiction a serious issue, thereby leading to mental health issues, depression, and anxiety.

What Can I Do to Prevent My Child from Using E-Cigarettes or to Help Them Stop?

There are several ways you can prevent your child from using electronic cigarettes and help them stop. Read on to find them.

  • Make sure your child isn't around any secondhand smoke from cigarettes or other tobacco products.
  • Discuss the dangers of e-cigarettes with your adolescent or child. Inform them that you believe e-cigarettes and all other tobacco products are dangerous and that you should avoid them.
  • It's never too late to quit smoking. (if you have addiction issues)
  • Make an appointment for your child to speak with a healthcare provider about the dangers of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. This will give them better value when they hear from a doctor.
  • Discuss the implementation of tobacco-free school grounds policies at your child's school.
  • You can also encourage teachers and the school administration to discuss the relationship between mental health issues and drug addiction. They can educate your children about tobacco/electronic cigarette prevention, addiction control issues, and side effects of vaping.
